The Royal Winnipeg Ballet enriches Manitoba’s cultural landscape with graceful productions and a firm dedication to artistic expansion. Dip your straw into the company’s Big Gulp and slurp down the poignant sequence of steps floating across Bright Lights, Big City’s three pieces. From an orchestra seat, patrons may witness the dynamic forms and shadows cast by choreographer Peter Quanz and composer Steve Reich’s rhythmic vision, “In Tandem.” Principal dancer Tara Birtwhistle bids farewell to postperformance bouquets of kewpie dolls and an illustrious career with RWB by embodying the gentle vulnerability of Ann Mortifee’s composition “The Ecstasy of Rita Joe.” The night’s triumvirate of motion climaxes with famed choreographer Twyla Tharp’s pulsating interpretation of Philip Glass’s “In the Upper Room.” Founded more than 70 years ago, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet is well-versed in putting on a grand performance or ending too-long wedding receptions with an emotional chicken dance.
