Convenient Airport Hotel with Causal and Fine Dining
Winnipeg gets its name from a Cree phrase meaning “muddy waters,” a reference to the juncture of the Assiniboine and Red Rivers, known as the Forks. The confluence of the two rivers once served as a trading hub for First Nations, and was later a commercial outpost for French fur traders, but today’s movers and shakers connect to Winnipeg by air. As the only hotel adjacent to the Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport, the Four Points by Sheraton Winnipeg International Airport complements travel plans with onsite dining and a courtesy, 24-hour terminal shuttle.
Within a modern space decorated with architectural prints, the Four Points Restaurant and Lounge serves contemporary fare, with menu items such as a veal burger ($9 CAN) and seafood salad with shrimp, scallops, and mussels ($14 CAN). At the more casual Four Points Sports Bar, diners put down slices of pizza while shooting billiards. After recharging in their comfortable accommodations, guests can make their way down to the front desk to summon an airport shuttle, usually available within five minutes (no reservation required).
Winnipeg, Manitoba: Historical Riverfront with Frequent Festivals
Once an aboriginal gathering place, the Forks later became the site of a series of forts in the 18th century. Today, the river junction forms a bustling city center, complete with The Forks National Historic Site. On summer weekends, costumed Parks Canada interpreters lead one-hour walking tours that explore 6,000 years of human settlement in the area. Steps away at the Forks Market, busking musicians, magicians, and stilt walkers wander between stalls, where merchants hawk fresh produce and handmade jewelry.
During winter at the Forks, the frozen Red River forms the longest ice-skating trail in the world, as determined by the Guinness Book of World Records and a guy named Earl who says he’s “seen it all.” Summer brings a string of outdoor festivals, including a colorful Canada Day celebration and an August Barge Festival, a riverside concert featuring a lineup of a dozen or so local bands.
