By the time Rea Tarnava’s son was a dozen weeks old, she’d been inundated with more than 20 different bibs from well-meaning givers. But she quickly went through them all without finding one that worked. Sharp velcro fasteners prickled his neck, and Rea feared the toxins lurking in bibs made of PVC plastic.

Rather than put up with uncomfortable, unsafe bibs, Rea decided to create her own line of nontoxic accessories that would be safe, sensible, and comfortable for her own son and other children. As she worked to develop a full line of products free of phthalates, PVC, lead, and formaldehyde, what started as a maternity-leave pastime grew into a full-time job, and Goo-Goo Baby was born.

Today, Goo-Goo Baby’s bibs, blankets, and bottles—each swathed in colourful designs—are sold in stores across the U.S., Canada, and Australia. Grants from the Industrial Research Assistance Program have also helped Rea expand the business to new products, such as leak-proof, stainless steel sport bottles. In 2007, Goo-Goo Baby also snagged iParenting Media’s Outstanding Product award for its gentle Totspot LED light, which reduces night blindness during checks for feral animal crackers under the bed.
