All Melvin Ferd the Third wants is a cleaner New Jersey. Unfortunately for him, Tromaville, the most polluted town in the state, is under tight control by a corrupt mayor. When this bureaucrat spots Melvin poking around in her business, she instructs her henchmen to do the unthinkable: dunk him in a vat of radioactive waste. But that might not have had the effect she was going for. Instead of dying, Melvin emerges from the green sludge with superhuman strength and a heart as big as his appearance is grotesque. Toxie, as the locals soon dub him, puts his newfound powers and mutated looks to work, cleaning up the town (literally and figuratively), fighting global warming, and wooing Tromaville’s beautiful (and blind) librarian.
The Off-Broadway hit, which is based on the Lloyd Kauffman cult-classic film of the same name, features a book by Joe DiPietro (I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change) and music by David Bryan, the keyboardist for Bon Jovi. While tearing off the limbs of evil-doers, Toxie belts out rock and pop anthems such as “Toxic Love” and “Evil Is Hot.” And if the lyrics weren’t enough to get audiences chuckling, the two supporting cast members do the trick as they hop into every role from evil henchman to call girl.
